Transplatation Infection Disease

On May 27, 1999, the Council of The Transplantation Society, meeting in Rome, voted unanimously to establish the Section on Infectious Disease with in The Transplantation Society. The mission of this section will be to promote research and education in the prevention, diagnosis, clinical consequences, and management of the infectious disease problems of the transplant recipient. To accomplish these goals an international Executive Committee has been established, consisting of the following: Robert H. Rubin (Boston, MA, USA) - Chairman, Jan Andersson (Stockholm, Sweden), Jay Fishman (Boston, MA, USA), Paul Griffiths (London, England), Petri Koskinen (Helsinki, Finland), Roberta Lattes (Buenos Aires, Argentina), Burt Meyers (New York, NY, USA), Carlos Paya (Rochester, NY, USA), Jutta Preiksaitis (Edmonton, AL, Canada), T. Hauw The (Groningen, The Netherlands), and Hannah Valentine (Palo Alto, CA, USA).

A number of projects have already been initiated by the Infectious Disease Section: the establishment of the journal Transplant Infectious Disease as the official journal of the section; sponsorship of the World Congress on Transplant Infectious Disease (the next such World Congress will be in Stockholm in June 2000 under the chairmanship of Jan Andersson and Per Ljungman); and cosponsorship of the Transplant Fellow Research Symposium (under the chairmanship of Jay Fishman). In addition, the Infectious Disease Section has, through the thoughtfulness and cooperation of the Council and Professor Rafaello Cortesini, had considerable input into the program for the upcoming Rome Transplantation Congress (September 2000). Infectious disease issues will be featured in both the Plenary Session and in Simultaneous Symposia. In the coming year, the following initiatives will be undertaken by the Section:
  1. Membership Drive - all members of the Infectious Disease Section will be full members of The Transplantation Society, and will be entitled to receive Transplant Infectious Disease at a reduced rate.
  2. Establish liaison between The Transplantation Society and the international infectious disease societies for purposes of defining a core knowledge base, credentialing, and development of education materials.
