International Xenotransplantation Association

We are pleased to announce the VII IXA Congress will be held in Glasgow, Scotland. An exciting mix of scientific program and social activities are planned!

Information regarding this meeting will be soon available on The Transplantation Society Web-Site (transplantation-soc.org).

The International Xenotransplantation Association (IXA) was established at the Montreal’98 Congress of the Society in July 1998, with the aim of providing a forum for those with a special interest in Xenotransplantation. The inaugural Officer and Councillors of the IXA, elected by mail vote before the Montreal’98 Congress, have met on five occasions during the past two years and have taken several steps to consolidate the establishment of the IXA.

Any member of The Transplantation Society can be admitted as a Full Member of the IXA. For those with an interest in Xenotransplantation but who do not wish to seek membership of the Society, such as veterinarians or microbiologists who do not have a primary interest in transplantation, Associate Membership is available at reduced annual dues. For those in clinical or research training posts, Junior Membership is available. (A membership application form is published in this Bulletin and gives details of these categories.)

The official journal of the IXA, Xenotransplantation, is available for all members at a greatly reduced annual subscription, which is little more than one third of the official price. Hugh Auchincloss, Jr., the Editor of the journal, which is now listed on Medline, encourages manuscript submissions from members of the IXA and the Society.

The Council of the IXA has set up a Specialist Advisory Committee of invited experts who will be available to advise the President and Council at times when expert opinion is deemed necessary. To date, four distinguished authorities have accepted the Council’s invitation to be members of this committee. They represent expertise in infectious disease (Jay Fishman, MD, of the Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston), comparative medicine (Michael Swindle, DVM, Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston), bioethics (Harold Vanderpool, PhD, ThM, University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston), and virology (Robin Weiss, PhD, FRS, University College, London).

The 6th Congress on Xenotransplantation, sponsored by the IXA, and the Society, was held in Chicago, USA , from September 29 to october 3, 2001. The Congress Committee, chaired by Jonathan P. Fryer and Joseph R. Leventhal, organized an excellent meeting with invited plenary speakers and symposia and poster sessions reflecting the best of the 350 or so abstracts submitted.

We encourage anyone with an interest in xenotransplantation to join us as a member of the IXA by contacting the Society’s Central Business Office.
