The Transplantation Society serves as the principal international forum for the advancement of both basic and clinical transplantation science throughout the world. Since its founding 34 years ago, the Society’s history has closely paralleled the development of organ transplantation to its current status.
The Society currently has over 3,000 members from 65 countries. Among its present and former members are six Nobel Laureates. In addition, the Society biennially awards the Medawar Prize, which is recognized as the world’s highest dedicated award for outstanding contributions in the field of transplantation.
The principal requirement for membership is an active interest in fostering of basic and clinical research in the broad field of transplantation science. Membership applicants will have contributed by their work to the advancement of knowledge in the field. Candidates proposed for membership are not required to have a Doctorate, an equivalent amount of experience or training being acceptable.

The Society sponsors biennial international congresses. The most recent congress, held in August 2002 in Miami ( XIX International Congress of the Transplantation Society ) was attended by 3,190 registrants, 169 accompanying persons, 304 exhibitors and 38 media for a total of 3,701 attendees. It featured 555 oral presentations and 1,091 poster presentation on recent advances in transplantation.
